A strain-gage force transducer contains a spring element with strain gages affixed to its surface attached at places of concentrated stresses. The force causes deformation of the element and a change in the resistances of the strain gages. The most common arrangement of a cell is the combination of two gages sensing a change in length and two others responding to contraction.
Most typical spring elements with strain gages affixed to its surfaces F = force, 1, 2, 3, and 4 = strain gages, 5 = solid cylinder, 6 = hollow cylinder, 7 = round proving ring, 8 = flat proving ring, 9 = cantilever, 10 = simply supported beam, 11 = restrained beam.
The strain gages are connected in a Wheatstone Bridge configuration, which acts as an adding and subtracting electrical network and allows compensation for temperature effects as well as cancellation of signals caused by extraneous loading.
