The Thermocouple is a thermoelectric temperature sensor. It consists of two dissimilar metals, joined together at one end, which produce a small unique voltage at a given temperature. They are based on the Seebeck effect that occurs in electrical conductors that experience a temperature gradient along their length. As temperature goes up, this output emf of the thermocouple rises, though not necessarily linearly. This voltage is measured and interpreted by a thermocouple thermometer.
Thermocouples are among the easiest temperature sensors to obtain and are widely used in science and industry.
