Temperature Sensors

Temperature sensors infer temperature by featuring some change in a physical characteristic. Temperature can be measured using many kinds of sensors. Six major types with which the engineer is likely to come into contact are:

  1. Thermocouples
  2. Resistance Temperature Devices (RTD’s and Thermistors)
  3. Infrared Radiation sensors
  4. Bimetallic devices
  5. Liquid expansion devices
  6. Change-of-state sensors

Other temperature measurement techniques exist such as gas, vapor pressure, acoustic, noise, and magnetic susceptibility thermometry. They either require great effort to implement or a severely constrained system design.
